Day 17: Des Moines and Minneapolis

I started off this morning by heading to the historic Governors mansion in Des Moines, although it didn't open until 10:30, so I went down the street to see the local sculpture park. When the mansion finally opened, it turned out I was the only visitor, so I ended up getting a private tour. It's a pretty neat mansion, although not a must see if you're in the area.

On the way out of Iowa, I decided to stop at Big Creek State Park for a nice place to make and eat my lunch. Made for a nice stop.

As I got closer to Minneapolis I decided to make a quick stop at the Mall of America. Not really sure why I stopped other than I've heard of it before. It's a really big mall with some roller coasters and other rides inside. Kinda neat.

I got a great deal on a hotel in the middle of downtown Minneapolis, so after checking in I decided to wander around a bit. What I learned is that this is a very upscale city. I felt under-dressed since I wasn't wearing a sports coat. I also stopped at a couple bars and learned that none of them know how to make an Old Fashioned, they all make them the Mad Men style, which is disappointing. I guess it's the trendy way to make them. Oh well.

Tomorrow I'll do some more exploring of the city and then head into Wisconsin.
